G – SUBRAMANIAN

Child-like portrayal of the Gods. The present inspiration for Subramaniums work in his own words is “The innocence and divine beauty in a child’s face and the power of Indian mythology.” With his portrayal of a child like Buddha and Krishna, he seeks to spark a sense of joy in his audience. He also explains, “My father was into folk theatre. The costumes and masks influenced my art by a great deal.” He uses the medium of collage and layers it along with acrylic paint and ink washes in brilliant hues to create mixed media works.

Born in Thandavankulam, Tamil Nadu, G. Subramanian graduated from the Govt. College of Arts & Crafts, Kumbakonam in 1974. Widely known for his unique mixed-media works, Subramanian uses the medium of collage, and layers it along with acrylic paint and ink washes in brilliant hues to create striking artworks. Child-like portrayal of the Gods like Radha, Krishna and Lakshmi seek to spark a sense of joy in the audience. 

In an artistic career spanning over 25 years, he has received numerous honours and prizes, which include the Saudi 3rd, 4th and 6th Malwan GCC Countries Biennale Awards, and the prestigious AIFACS award in 2000. He has held more than 10 solo shows and participated in numerous exhibitions at the state and national levels, and also in auctions for charity. G. Subramanian’s works can be found in private collections all over the world, as well as in galleries, museums and corporates.
